Let's assume that a traditional Smart DNS supports Netflix in 3 locations - US, UK and AU.

As a standard DNS server can only resolve Netflix to one ip we assume that US will be country where they locate the central Netflix proxy.

Users that want to watch Netflix US can stream directly from US - no problem with that.


Let's look at a user from Europe who wants to access Netflix UK:

He will get directed to the central Netflix proxy in US. The US proxy will connect to the Netflix proxy in UK and fetch the stream.

The result is that the Netflix UK stream will take a trip to US and back to Europe - resulting in mediocre streaming quality.


Let's look at a user in New Zealand who wants to watch Netflix AU:

He will connect to US and US will connect to AU to fetch the stream.

Instead of connecting directly to AU the stream gets to travel half way around the world - resulting in a very low quality stream with huge packet loss (stops all the time)
